Bodegas Marqués de Velilla – La Horra, Ribera del Duero
Architecture and Design by Marcos Sainz (MS Design)

In the heart of Ribera del Duero, Bodegas Marqués de Velilla stands as a testament to the union of tradition, landscape, and contemporary architecture. The winery, designed by renowned architect Marcos Sainz, founder of MS Design, blends harmoniously into the spectacular natural surroundings of Monte Villalobón, one of the most remarkable estates in the region.

Founded in 1985 by the Hernández de Mercado family, Marqués de Velilla moved to its current location in La Horra in 1996. It was here that Marcos Sainz envisioned and created a building that not only respects the identity of the land but elevates it through thoughtful architectural language.

The design reflects a sophisticated interplay between traditional Castilian rural style and subtle colonial influences, resulting in a structure that feels rooted in its history while expressing a bold, contemporary character. Careful attention was given to materiality, proportions, and integration into the landscape, using local stone, earthy tones, and volumes that follow the natural topography of the estate.

Beyond its striking exterior, the winery’s interior spaces are designed to support both functionality and experience. The layout optimizes the winemaking process while offering panoramic views of the vineyards, generous natural light, and carefully crafted areas for visitors.

Since 1998, the winery has been fully self-sufficient, with 183 hectares of estate-owned vineyards, planted primarily with Tinta del País, along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Merlot.

In addition to wine production, Marqués de Velilla offers exclusive enotourism experiences. Thanks to the architectural vision of Marcos Sainz, the winery provides unique spaces for guided tours, private celebrations, weddings, corporate events, and wine tastings — all within a setting that reflects both the heritage of Ribera del Duero and the contemporary elegance that defines MS Design’s work.
